MCAST Directives

The Union of Professional Educators – Voice of The Workers has been contacted by several members of the union regarding the following issues:

  • Face to face models on lower levels (1 to 3)
  • Hybrid Model (face to face and online)

These models of instruction were decided upon by MCAST management without informing the lecturers of their intention to proceed with their implementation.

It was also decided, without consulting the lecturers concerned, that higher levels would be receiving their instruction completely online.

The union asks, how was the distinction between levels and teachers made?

The UPE is thus is lodging a trade dispute with DIER on the matter and hopes that a solution is found through dialogue.

In the meantime the UPE is issuing the following directives to all its members working at MCAST, these will go into effect as from Wednesday 25th November 2020 :

  • MCAST lecturers who are members of the UPE and who teach levels 1 to 3 are to refrain from giving face-to-face lectures (This is at the discretion of the lecturer).
  • MCAST lecturers who are members of the UPE and who teach levels 1 to 3 are to refrain from teaching using the hybrid model (half and half model).

The UPE cannot accept a situation in which several members of the Union, who are working in the same workplace, receive different treatment., are receive different treatment. At this point in time, online lecturing is by far the safest protocol to keep all stakeholders safe during this pandemic, and if online lecturing is safe for some, it should be offered to all on an equal basis.
