Head of School at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary cast a dark cloud over the entire teaching staff

The Union of Professional Educators – Voice of The Workers, has noticed a pattern emerging with regards to the way complaints about teachers are being handled at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School. While the Union recognizes the importance of student feedback and of customer satisfaction, it condemns the use of isolated cases to cast a dark cloud over the entire teaching staff.

The Union strongly objects to examples being made of individual teachers during staff meetings, even if these teachers are not mentioned by name. If any complaints are received, the School Management Team should forward them to the teacher(s) concerned, and no other member of staff needs to be informed of the matter. An effort must be made to listen to the teachers’ or teacher’s version of the facts and to resolve issues without unnecessary recrimination.

Moreover, given that mid-yearly deadlines are approaching, teachers found these meetings to be an unnecessary use of their limited available time. The UPE recommends that meetings are only called when a teacher’s input is required. If the headmaster feels the need to divulgate information, an email should be considered sufficient.
