The intervention of the UPE in favour of KGEs bears fruit.

The issue presented by the Union of Professional Educators – Voice of The Workers has reached successful resolution with the Ministry of Education, in the past week.

The Union had raised the issue that several KGEs who graduated before 2016 with an MQF Level 4, had a course content of a total of 112 ECTS. Unfortunately, when some of these KGEs tried to apply, over the past weeks, for the post of ECEC Supply Teachers, they were told that the requirement is of MQF Level 4 with 120 ECTS. This level description however applies only to those who graduated after 2017 and consequently precludes anyone who graduated before that.

The Union pointed out that the recent call issued by the Ministry implied that any KGEs who graduated before 2016 would not be considered eligible to apply for the post of supply ECEC Teacher.

Referring to the official agreement the UPE quoted that a recognised comparable qualification should be accepted.

In the case of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) applicants must be in possession of a VET Diploma at MQF Level 4 in childcare with a minimum of 120 ECTS/ECVET credits or equivalent) in Childcare and four (4) passes at Ordinary Level (O Level grade A- C) and/or Secondary Education Certificate (SEC grade 1-5) (MQF Level 3), or a recognised comparable qualification, which must include English Language, Maltese Language and Mathematics.”

After a lengthy exchange with the Ministry of Education and Employment the qualifications put forward by our members were determined and confirmed as being eligible for application for the post. The call has now been updated to adequately reflect this agreement.
