The UPE Issues Industrial Action Against Clubclass English Language School

The UPE Issues Indrustrial Action Against Clubclass.

The Union of Professional Educators – Voice of the Workers is currently following the situation being lived by EFL teachers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been a key factor in assisting these teachers in more ways than one in the past months. Many have joined the union, entrusting it with the management of complex situations, feeling that finally there was someone who was willing to put them at the forefront.

Some schools had enough teachers joining the union to guarantee sole recognition by the union, and the UPE was very proactive when registering for recognition. None of the schools posed any particular resistance to this, to date, except for the owner at Clubclass. This gentleman not only ignored the instructions by the DIER to respond to their communication with the data required for the recognition process, but also ignored FELTOM and ELT Council when they called him to mediate on behalf of the union.

The owner at Clubclass also seemed to feel he was well-above social niceties, when he hung up abruptly on calls by union officials attempting to initiate courteous communication with him, and refusing to take the required communication any further.

It has become blatantly evident that this person has no respect for his employees’ right to affiliation, and is trying to refuse them the possibility of having somebody represent them, should a dispute arise at any point in time.

The union will continue to try to initiate communication with Clubclass but is feeling that all possible attempts at cordial engagement and negotiation have now been exhausted. The union will thus issue the first of a series of directives, for its Clubclass members only, on Thursday the 18th of June 2020.

  • Teachers who are members of the UPE will not accept, or return, any digital/electronic/direct communication with the school management/students. Time sheets and attendance sheets are to be handed in as usual, but no further communication should be engaged in.

Legal disclaimer: This directive has been issued only for the teachers who are members of the UPE at Clubclass.
